Personal protection can be done when your dog mastered the obedience. The major part plays the dog's personality.
Not every dog can be used for a personal protection training. Your dog has to show proper temperament, nerves and
full obedience to the handler. Protection tests dog's self-control, temperament and willingness to follow the commands.
Fully trained dog has to be safe around children. The dog is well socialized and their training's done under control.
K9 dogs are supposed to be willing to defend the handler, trust the handler's judgement, fully obey the commands and directions.
The protection is very similar to police training. All bites are on a padded sleeve worn by a decoy (specially trained
person).
In all exercises, the handler's control of the dog is absolutely essential. The protection phase begins with the dog
performing a search of several hiding places looking for the decoy. When the dog finds the decoy he must guard - but not touch.
The dog is expected to protect the handler, when the decoy attempts to attack the handler.
Bites: Must be full and firm.
The dog must not show any fear, nervousness or hesitation at any time even if the decoy fights or counter-attacks the gog with a
(padded) stick. Your dog has to remain under the absolute control, respond quickly and correctly to commands, and to be able to
disengage immediately upon handler's command.
DOGS THAT ARE DANGEROUSLY AGGRESSIVE, OUT OF CONTROL, ARE LACKING IN NERVE,
COURAGE AND SELF-CONFIDENCE DON'T PERFORM WELL IN THE PROTECTION PHASE. |
